The Weight of Heaven

Rinnnnnnnnggggggg!!!!!!!

“Okay class don’t forget to read the selection I gave you. It will serve as your assignment for today and be ready for the discussion tomorrow.” as Ms. Cecille heard the school bell signals for dismissal.

“Good bye Ma’am! Thank you for teaching us today, God bless us!”  And the student arranged their chairs as they leave the room.

Ms. Cecille was about to leave the classroom when she noticed  a student sitting asleep  and at the left corner of the room and holding the paper that she gave a while ago. She walked nearer to take a closer look to know who the student is.

“Jesso again? Wake up, it’s already time!”

The boy immediately looked up when he heard a familiar voice. “ I’m so sorry Ma’am,I was just reading the selection and I….. I….. fell asleep.

“That’s okay, but I won’t tolerate it again. You may go and continue sleeping at home.”

“Im really sorry Ma’am.” The boy walked out the room and  Ms. Cecile was left alone wondering about the Jesso.

“He seems in hurry.” As she looked at the boy walking away from the room wearing a dirty white polo  and a navy blue pants that look so small for him. Unlike the other students she has in her class, they look nice and wearing clean and new sets of uniform, shining shoes, and fancy accessories. But with Jesso, he comes to school with his crumpled uniform, his shoes were not shiny as what his classmates have. His hair ‘s not neatly combed and most of all, the 10- year old boy seems so tired even if it’s just 6:30 in the morning.

The next morning, the students are reading their selection when suddenly Ms. Cecille’s attention was caught by a student pointing Jesso sleeping in his seat. Ms. Cecille just nodded his head as sign that she understands what her student is trying to say. This scene was repeated and repeated again until she realized that she must do something about it.

One day, while everybody is doing their activity, Ms. Cecille called Jesso and nodded her head as a signal to her student to come near to her table.

“I want to talk to you after the class.”

“Okay Ma’am” Jesso answered with wonders in his face.

The student return to his seat and Ms. Cecille continue to read on the records of Jesso since he was in Grade one. As what was written in the record, Jesso has many absent and records of late. He also has comment about frequent sleeping in the class. It is noted that Jesso is a fast learner but absents and sleeping in class hinder to his development. It also said that it is his third time to repeat grade 2.

After class, all the students were out of the room when Jesso approached her teacher.

“Ma’am? You said that you wanted to talk to me.”

“Yes Jesso, I just wanted to talk about you, your sleeping habits and absents in the class.”

Jesso brought out a picture and gave it to his teacher.

“What’s this Jesso?” Ms. Cecille asked looking at the picture.

“That’s my brother Ma’am. He has autism. I am the one who’s working for our daily living. We don’t know where my parents are. We were left by our mother in our Aunt’s house. We escape from our Aunt Melsa’s house because she kept on hurting me and my brother whenever I’m not able to finish his errands on time. We are now living in the small room in Mang Teban’s shop in the market.  I wake up 2 am in the morning to help him arrange the vegetables and sell it. After class I go to the poultry to get some “balut” and sell it on evening. I have to work for allowance and food for me and my brother. I’m sorry Ma’am, for being absent and sleeping in your class. I promise I won’t do it again.”

“I understand it Jesso.” That’s the only thing that came out from Ms. Cecille’s mouth in that very moment. Words are not enough to say something to a little hero sitting in front of her. After that conversation, Ms. Cecile went to the principal and asked for some scholarship or any educational assistance program. He told the story of Jesso and the principal also wanted to help the kid.

The next day Ms. Cecile talked to Jesso about the scholarship mentioned by the principal. He should pass the examination to get the scholarship that will help him to finish elementary. They only have two weeks to prepare for the examination and Ms. Cecille offer him some reviewers and to have a review every day after their class. The examination day came and Jesso make it to the top 5 scholars. Ms. Cecille was very happy for Jesso. From that day on, Jesso refrained from being absent and sleeping in the class and strived more in school. Months had passed and Jesso was able to pass Grade 3.

After 3 years, he was now holding his elementary diploma taking pictures with his brother.

Four years had gone so fast. Jesso was able to finish high school and ready to take his college degree in Bachelor of elementary Education. After four hard working years, his stepped down on stage wearing medal as cum laude.

“Thank you Ma’am!” as Jesso gave his medal to Ms. Cecille and gave her a warm hug.

“I know that you can do it.” Ms. Cecille said with a tears falling from her eyes as she watched Jesso embrassed his celebrating brother with his victory.
