The Nails Fever!

By Lean  Begona

They say that beauty lies in the hands of a lady. Yes it's true, figuratively and literally!

As a grown up lady, I am fond of this “kikay stuff”. Nail polish is one of my hobbies (not just a simple hobby). I collect and buy a lot of nail polish whenever I see a beauty shop. I was just influenced by Mom who’s really fond of this stuff. They say that “like mother, like daughter” and manicure and pedicure became our bonding time. So now I wanted to share with you this cute hobby of mine, let’s take a closer look on what nail polish is all about and how it started.

My Collection

There is a part of our hands that really adds beauty especially for girls; it is no other than our nails. One of the most popular accessories today is the nail polish that we can see in every girl's nails. Nail polish is a lacquer which can be applied to the human finger or toe nails as a covering to protect the nail's plate and decorate. Nail polish originated from China during 3000 BC. During the Zhou Dynasty (600 BC), the royal house preferred to paint their nails with gold
and silver nail polishes. Eventually, red and black replaced the gold and silver preference of the royal house. In Egypt, nail polish is known as a mark of the person's social status.  Pale colors are for the lower class and the higher social class wears the red color.

Nail polish started with five basic colors namely: clear, red, pink purple and black. As years goes by, many variants of colors were out in the market. There are several types of polishes, first one is the base coat/ hardener, it is a clear or milky- colored formula which is applied before applying the nail polish, it is used to strengthen the nails, adds moisture and secure that the nail polish will not be easily removed days after the application. The next type is the top coat, it’s a clear formulated polish that is applied after putting the nail polish to completely cover the nail polish, to make the nail polish dries faster and protect it for scratches and peeling. Top coat is also known as "quick dry or fast dry".

Nail polish has innovated and marks its own part in the fashion history. Today, another innovation for nail polish became popular and known as "Nail Art". The traditional way of nail polishing has transformed into a creative way of designing our finger and toe nails. Nail art has more processes compared to common nail polishing; it deals more on the design and materials which is added to the traditional nail polish. Nail art it also consider now as a fashion activity well- known all through-out the country.

As of now I have more or less 33 colors of nail polish in my set. It's really an amazing feeling when I see my collection gets bigger.  I think I have to buy a new box where can I put all of these nail polishes of mine.

For me nail polishing and Nail art are just two ways to pamper ourselves but always remember that too much is not good. It is advised to have manicure and pedicure twice a month. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have clean and well-decorated nails but safety is always the first priority. It's better safe than sorry. We should learn to control and remind ourselves that at the end of the day, safety and health should be on top.
